When you bring your car in with the "check engine" like, we hook it up to a scanner; this technology has been around for about 30 years. The scanner "talks" to your car's onboard computer, which tells the scanner what's ailing your car.
Advanced, state-of-the-art scanners like the MODIS can take advantage of the software capabilities of a modern vehicle. The MODIS allows us to turn off any number of engine cylinders, for example, so we can ferret out an ignition or timing problem.
